by a combat of a few days, a bloody and obstinate one may be
prevented. When a fire breaks out, ought we to hesitate
in preserving the city at the expense of the house? When sickness
appears, should the patient refuse to take a remedy, however
bitter, which would stop its progress? At the first
dawn of absolute power, at the first symptoms of despotism,
France also will not hesitate. We may say more –
it is the friends of order, above all to the faithful friends
of the dynasty, that it is important not to lose any time.
They Thus must they act, or liberty will escape. The dynasty has
no other means of safety; and if it could know what
is said at its doors, and even in its saloons – if
it knew what words are pronounced there, and what revolutions
are formed! But the voice of courtiers is never
raised beyond a weak and timid murmur. Rather than
cause a discontented look, a frown, or a severe expression,
they would witness the downfall of those whom they serve,
whom they love, and to whom they owe every thing.
In default of courtiers, then, it behoves the devoted friends
of the dynasty to labour for its preservation; and with
this view they must make common cause with
us. Several have already done so – one above all, who,
generously pre-occupied, at another epoch, cried out –
"Let us save the King, even when" — and who now
with greater reason repeats this cry of
horror and alarm? His mighty genius knows
that the destinies of the age are not irrevocably
fixed; and, like a wise politician, he is also
aware that sometimes resistance is the support
of certain families.

To conclude, the Ministry has, either by consent or
by favour, a great mission to fulfill – a mission
which, if it last, will hurry us to new troubles.
In that case, submission would retard the crisis
only to make it more terrible. Legal resistance
