Parly Reform Sinecures
Admitted that the official title serves the purpose of .
When the amount was variable or his amounts the same,
the amount would not to distinguish the sinecure.
But if when a man is called by one of those
official titles Auditor of the Exchequer, Teller of
the Exchequer, Chief Justice in Eyre, Clerk of the
Crown on the King's Bench in Ireland, nobody is deceived
– if it be really known to every body that
in every instance each and every one of those instances by him who is said to by his
official title is represented as charged with the duties
of that office nothing in fact is done but the receiving to
his own use so much money just as if what he
possessed was neither more nor less than a pension
to that same amount, then what a use or object is the defence of sinecures one
not without an object have the exertions that we see employed in the defence
of Sinecures?
But to this question the answer has been given
already, viz. that there in whatsoever be the number
of articles upon the Sinecure list there may be so many always
so many perpetual pensions, which as they fall in
must be given to somebody, merit or no merit, and
which thereby may be each of them given where there is no merit
nor so much as a pretence of it, with a degree of
facility and secresy which such as would not accompany
the bestowal of a pension to that same amount under
the name of a pension.
