Sinecures

Turning to the English Court of Chancery, they found sitting
in it one a Judge who though but the second
rank felt in such his station his own person an efficient power
such as enabled him to srt at defiance that of the
Commons House of Parliament. That power he
accordingly did set at defiance: I speak of the Master of the Rolls, and the proof of it
this having do so done is seen in the blank which in the Table of Official
emolument presented on the subject under the head of the Court of
Chancery occupies under the head of Master of the Rolls
the place space which ought to have been filled by the
figures expressive of the amount of the emolument
derived by the then Master from that his Office.

ThisFor men whose continuancy stands thus expressed
was Sir Pepper Arden, afterwards placed in the chief
seat of the Common Pleas and at the same time succeed
to the peerage under the name of Lord Alvanley.
Ask what it was that th placed this man above
the House of Commons in the line of power – the answer
was is the same circumstance merit for in vain would any
other be looked for that so soon afterwards placed
him above the members of it in the line of rank
viz. his intimacy with the Minister of the day that time
the late Mr Pitt.
