Sinecures
Moreover in Appendix No 77, having which bears for its title Left
of Reversions and of Office held for Joint Lives in England
Plantations, under a subordinate head division intituled "Reversions
"in the Colonial Department of Secretary of State", I find
eight articles: in the first seven first of them no such indications are in figures in the
column in question or in any other to be found: in the
eighth column viz. that in which mention is made of
a "Provost Marshal in Barbados", is any such intimation
given: viz. by the figures 824 which may be seen standing in their appropriate
place, as above.
The signature of the person on the credit of whose testimony statement
the information is reported, was it or was it not regarded
as requisite to be annexed reported given in connection with it?
To any such question Were I obliged to find return an answer to this question, my
perplexity I must confess, would be extreme.
In the Appendix No 79,⊞ ⊞ bearing for its title
"Reversions and Offices
held for Joint Lives,
in Ireland are three numbered papers No numbered
No 1; No 2; and No 3: and to each of these is subjoined
one authenticating signature, viz. "James Train, Chief
Secretary, Office, Dublin Castle, 23d April 1808". But
in the same No 79 before the first of these three papers, comes stands
a string of articles, seven in number not furnished with any such signature,
articles seven in number the two first of which are those
which have must been spoken of as not affording any
indication of the No denomination of the Paper in and by which the
information was conveyed.
Here out of four masses of information we have at at rate three papers in this one No of the Appendix furnished
as above with an authenticating signature: but in no one of the several
of the other Nos of this Appendix relating to Sinecures and
Reversions is any authent such other example of any such
authenticating signature
to be found.
