Of those advantages the existence can not in either
instance be wholly denied: but the more closely they are
looked into the more inconsiderable they will be seen to be.

Be the business what it may, a general liking to it
or at any rate the absence of aversion, will be evinced by
the acceptance of the office, under the conditions under which it
is offered, and the in case of sale, the higher the price
given for it, the stronger as already observed is greater the degree of liking which it
proves. When this degree is sufficient, any higher sufficient
to cause the business to be done as well as it is capable
of being done, any higher degree of alacrity supposing
it produced will not to any other individ person but the
official person by whom it is experienced be of any use.
But in this case are offices in general, with a few and
but a few exceptions.

2. As the case of the Shopkeeper, the parallel analogy is not near as close as at first view it may appear to be.
