Alarm and universal terror spread
At the deluded tyrant's stern command,——
The dread fore-runners these of battles dread, —
Gleaming with iron each fort frowns o'er the land
To the Vizier and Aga speed,
And fierce amid them mingling stand:
, with lordly air, that valiant threng,
The despot, frowning as he pass'd along.

Himself aloft he seated at their head,
And houghtily declared his high intent;
His purpose glad the whole obey.d,
Cross.d on their breasts their Arms and lowly bent;
Then spoke the first: "No sooner shall they blade,
"Be rais'd, , the battlement!
"Than at its flash thy foes shall melt away,
"Till And the whole world shall own the Prophet's sway.

"And as then hast begun thy course hold on,
" let thy sword extend the law divine;
"In chains of slavery let the stubborn groan,
"But on the yielding let thy favour shine;
"O'er earth's remotest limits shall be known
"Thy power, led by so pious a design:
"The world in former times proud Rome obey'd
"At Stamboul's throne its crowns must now he laid."
