Mont Blanc
I looked upon thy snowy face sublime
Mountain of majesty! & Thou wert there
Clad in the strength which seemed not of neither earth nor of time
I felt as if I were a worshipper
In presence of a God! Thou didst appear
The very representative of power
Thy will
Thou stand rear'dst thee like a everlasting near-decaying power
And thy wide arms embraced this worldly option.
O thou, whom ages change not! in thy sight
How poor a thing is man! how poor & vain
With the least mountain of mass that forms thy mighty chain
Compared & weigh'd – 'Tis weakness all – Thou might
He a poor shadow flittering thro' the night
Thou holding on thy everlasting .
