The confusion thus produced is scarcely inferior
to that which would be produced if for designating
the same colour two different colours the black and
white, the one to the exclusion of the other, the same
word black or else the same word white were employed.

For extricating the mind from this confusion no resource
it is afforded at present but that which is afforded
by the context. But cases are not wanting in which
after every elucidation conjecture inference that can be drawn from the context
in which of the two senses the word was meant to
be employed will remain matter of uncertainty: and
also insomuch that by the individual's supposing it to have been meant
in one sense, while by the Judge it is destined to be
supposed to have been meant in the other evil to any
amount may come to be the lot of the unfortunate
individual. This is what will sometimes happen.
But that which will be continually happening is –
that for use during a length of time more or less considerable,
a man the mind will be in doubt which of the two
was meant: and proportioned to the importance of
the subject and the occasion will be the unpleasantness
of the mental failing thus produced.

For remedying this imperfection and thereby excluding
the evils so apt as above to be produced by it, one only expedient resource
does the nature of the case admitt of. This is the
employing exclusively using in the one case one word or combination of words
in the other case another.

Accordingly throughout the course of the present work
or else in the combination of words that will be employed
instead of or where the sense made meant to be conveyed is
the disjunctive: or say where the sense made meant to
be conveyed is the subdisjunctive.
