In the earlier part of the Greek contest it was
earnestly desired & strongly recommended to the provisional
parliament of Greece that they should dispatch envoys
to the different parts of Europe, which had shown in order to give show an
strong sympathy in these cases. effect to that enthusiasm which had spontaneously manifested itself in their favour. But it was only
at the start of the year 1822 that this a series
of enabled the Greeks to adopt these
suggestions, g and Agaeus Mr Lucriottis was then
commissioned, cause, ...
to visit this country and to consult the
friends of Greece on the best means of advancing her
independence & freedom. On his arrival here in January
1823 several meetings were held among those who had
been watching the progress of the Greek revolution with
intense interest & anxiety, and as manifestations of public
sympathy were visible whichever way they looked, they
determined to concentrate the scattered suggestions &
exertions of individuals, – & to give them all the strength
& usefulness of which they were susceptible, – by the formation
of a Committee, whose sole object should be to further the
