To the Memory of Howard
Stratus
When from o'er the silent bosom of the lake sea
The expansive cold mist hangs, like a thread canopey
And the moon mingling there its shadowy beams
A spirit fashioning other spirits seems;
O thou we feel are – then Nature (then we feel
All that we feel What we become we know not – but we feel
O nature! – joy's unutterable thrill.
Then spreading still gathering as it scales the mountains side
Streaks upon upon streaks it spreads its unfurls the darkening curtains wide
Over that O'er shade mountains mid-heightway height; – & then
It sinks in water-drops, or soars in air.
Cumulus.
Then towering still, as if it heard the a call
To a sublimer seat in heaven's arched hall
High as the clouds, – in with pomp & power arrayed displayed
Inshrined in strength – in majesty arrayed,
All the souls fears & hopes it seems to move
It trembles it – & it frowns above
