To a sweet girl of 12 years old

Melodies are thy songs, my dove
Thy music exquisite!
Yet, with a few, few grains of love,
They would be doubly sweet.
The muse erects her brightest throne
In love's soft bosom, fair!
Yet three short years – enchanting one
And you thou shall own her there.
You talked of love sometimes, I know
But talks unknowingly
But love himself shall once one day show
Its misteries to thee.
The eloquence of looks – & sighs
Are yet Moves not as yet thy ears
But these short springs shall not arise
To bring no changes, dear!
If love even now can grace thy song
All slumbering as he is –
What will the intruder be, ere long
When roused to life & bliss?
If thus thy spirit speaks, O say
How What will thy heart bosom do?
When those short springs shall pass away
And those cold winters too?

La Fontaine
