§.2 Universal Jurisprudence
(3
Answer to of your question.
These are words of Jurisprudence,
not of English only but the equivalent
of them on the Continent
to every where.
[Universal Jurisprudence] Answered therefore you are now — and we hope tolerably well
satisfied as to of your six questions — What means
Jurisprudence, and what hope is it to us, and what is the
use of it. For so far as it goes they go, these words are all every of them
words of Jurisprudence. And not only of English Jurisprudence
but there is the exact equivalent of them in the several languages
Now for the these
the words of the Jurisprudence of the ones neighbours on the
Continent, aye and of every other Continent and every
other Island.
No great advance yet. True.
but in import of those we
have Key to the rest.
[Readers] This True May be so say you: but it is as yet
way that to no great advance have we made as yet:
if we have got one or one A B C in this alphabet
we have not got a step further.
True: but in the import of these words — we have
the foundation — the root — the key of all the others: Open the foundation the root — Key —take what you will
of all these maps.
Now. Right, obligation &c
these are words of universal
jurisprudence — ask any
lawyer or Blackstone's Ghost,
they will not deny it; but ask
how the import of them springs
out of the Second set — they
will only stare.
Enter now. [Right] Obligation Duty. Right. Burthen Power. Service. Possession Benefit
Trust
These you at any rate are all of them are words of Jurisprudence — Yes
and Universal Jurisprudence: these or more. Ask if
they are not; ask any lawyer you meet with, let him
deny it if he can. Ask [should it even happen to you
to meet with it in a Church Yard of a Night in
company with or without his friend the Witch of ] It is
work is the Ghost of Blackstone. Thus far they can not avoid answering
you nor when they answer you, answering in the affirmative.
But ask them then how it is that the import of these this silent set
of words is grounded in, or springs out of, or is interpreted
by its relation to that of the second set — a stare if all
you will get from them: no answer will you have
But now is arrived the time for giving one.
