Proportionate to what it is the appropriate aptitude of these their respective
Oracle, must have of course be in this case and to this extent
the degree of appropriate aptitude that has place in the part branch of their thus
respective role of votaries. If in general in a certain degree the Oracle class were relatively
deficient, the votary votary class would be so too. But, of the in the
state of society in question there is little that is
in the majority of the districts the character minds of the Oracle
that is to any such parts of them as are before the public
should be in any such unapt state as to operate upon the
votaries with any considerably mischievous effect is by no
means probable. No In no country at no time has any such characteristic
effect manifested itself. Among the Oracle moral in the moral branch aptitude
and inaptitude have place of course in an infinite variety or proportions. In so far as its branch in the instance of any such branch inaptitude is
decided if this Oracle stood alone – no rivals to keep him
in check, his influence might be to any degree seriously pernicious. But
this is never the case. No mark of improbity ever breaks out
but his rivals – all thus writers and speakers whose situation is
on the off side opposite to that which he has taken, are eager to
bring it to light and display it. In the way of authority his
influence is thus destroyed. But it to what degree so ever has
the influence through the medium which in a general way in the character of an authority
is destroyed, the such influence as which by means through the medium of argument
it has happened to him to exercise ranking untouched: and
thus it is that while the evil that would might have been produced by men of the sort character
in question is destroyed or as far as it appears, nips
in the bud, the good takes root and produces flourishes its fruit.

☞ here is like the difference between the influence of a corrupt
man and in a democracy and corrupt ruler or a Monarchy. The
ruler all gainsayers.
