Expence of punishment 4 N. S. Wales N.B. 4324 Those further

In estimating the annual expence per head during
this last period of six years, 4324, making three quarters
of the whole number shipped off from first to
last in the course of the whole period of 12 years
would be an improper number to divide with:
some it supposes more to have gone off in any
part of that whole period: whereas taking 7 years
is by far the most common term for transportation, which
reckoning 1 year upon an average for the time
consumed previous to shipping off, is thereby reduced
to 6 years for N. S. Wales. But Therefore after
the expiration of the first 6 years, supposing
the numbers shipped off to be the same in every
year and no more, the number that become
emancipated every year and thereby cease to
be convicts under sentence, will be equal to
the number of the new recruits:
