Composition
Sentences to be short
1
Crowd not too many things into a sentence. let
not your sentences be short. The shorter they are, the
easier they will be apprehended and remembered ++ Prefat. p.16.Children
2
Enumeration - to be performed in a sentence by itself
When a long train of articles are to be enumerated
for any purpose let not the enumeration be
included in the middle of a paragraph, but perform it
by a paragraph on purpose.
3
Simplicity must be preferred
It is not enough to render a compose such
a body of Laws as shall be methodical and concise:
the business is if possible to keep it so. The business
is if possible to keep it to to the end of time.
4
Horace's rule of Brevity
Quiquid principias, esto brevis:
says Horace: and he adds the reason
ut cito dicta
Precipiant animi docilis, tineantque fidiles
Notjing can be more accurate nor more just: yet
in England, Horace for some centuries [+] has been [+] [Horace, tho a poet, & what is more a Latin poet, & one of the most popular of Latin poets]
preaching to the winds.
5
Brevity and explicitness
A discourse should be short, to be remembered: explicit,
to be understood.
6
Explicitness for common use
What may be not explicit enough to suggest all
tho cares of itself & without expiration, may of itself be explicit
enough to suggest the greater number of cases, and
those which are apt most frequently to occur.
7
Explicitness for recollection
What is not explicit enough for [the conveying of ] to convey original instruction
in the first instance may be explicit enough for the assistance of recollection
