Considerations upon the Export Trade from
Great Britain to India, with a plan and proposals for the Increase
thereof
The Company have never gained by their Exports from
England since their acquirements of Territorial Revenue. For many
years they have not sent out above one quarter of their Tonnage in
goods. So that in place of Ships loading with British Manufactures,
they have gone chiefly in Belfast. Notwithstanding this, the Commanders
have been confined to their outward investments, by
which the Companys exclusive privilege has hitherto most completely
discouraged the British Manufacturers who otherwise would
have had from our National Influence in the East the whole supply
in their own hands. So far from the Mother Country benefiting
as it ought to have done, by such an exclusive Market for her Exports,
his Trade has been forced into the hands of Foreigners by our confined
policy.
Our Exports to India in Goods may have been about
5000 Tons valuing the first cost at £350,000. Our Exports to China
might have valued about £125000 and the Tonnage proportionably
small.
The French, Dutch, Danes, Swedes, Portuguese and other
foreign Exports to India have of late years exceeded 15,000 Tons
annually two thirds of which would in a very short time, be
transferred to us with proper management. In like manner would
a large part of the foreign exports to China come into our hands.
The reasons why our Company have lost this most valuable
Trade are many & obvious: The most notorious I will endeavour
to point out. No Company like ours can ever gain on
Exports to India so much as private adventurrers would. The
returns from the East are very different from our Exports. The
former sell at once by wholesail in London, which may be stiled
the general market for Europe. The Company's Exports to India
on the contrary, after their being landed there must be either by
them or others at second hand retailed over countries more extensive
than all Europe. The greater the Company the more unequal
to such a detail.
