If any defender of these proceedings <sic>chuses</sic> to suppose<lb/>
it was not wished or <add>nor</add>  intended the Laws in <lb/>
question should be executed, I will readi<del>ng</del>ly accede <add><unclear>adapt</unclear></add></hi> <lb/>
to the proposition: let us <add>him</add> see what advantage he<lb/>
will derive from it.</p>

Let Intolerance in itself be <add>a thing</add> ever so bad,<lb/>
<add> &amp; ever so justly odious to this country</add> there can be no doubt but it may be pressed for<lb/>
from real judgment &amp; with a good conscience.<lb/>
But if their approbation of these Laws <add>was founded</add> depended<lb/>
upon the expectation of their not being <sic>executd</sic><lb/>
the Laws now are not only abusive, but known<lb/>
to be so by those who gave them their support.<lb/>
This expectation can be founded on nothing but the<lb/>
persuasion of their being contrary to the universal<lb/>
sense of the nation: for nothing less than the<lb/>
universal sense of the nation in this matter<lb/>
could screen the objects of them from being overwhelmed<lb/>
in a torrent of <unclear>persecution</unclear> for one moment<lb/>

If any defender of these proceedings chuses to suppose
it was not wished or nor intended the Laws in
question should be executed, I will readingly accede adapt</hi>
to the proposition: let us him see what advantage he
will derive from it.

Let Intolerance in itself be a thing ever so bad,
& ever so justly odious to this country there can be no doubt but it may be pressed for
from real judgment & with a good conscience.
But if their approbation of these Laws was founded depended
upon the expectation of their not being executd
the Laws now are not only abusive, but known
to be so by those who gave them their support.
This expectation can be founded on nothing but the
persuasion of their being contrary to the universal
sense of the nation: for nothing less than the
universal sense of the nation in this matter
could screen the objects of them from being overwhelmed
in a torrent of persecution for one moment
— when I say universal, it cannot be supposed
