The Cement I have happen'd to employ is Sealing
Wax: I drop it on, and then smooth it and
apply it to the crevices with a hot Iron,
The method mixing-Phial, as far as I could
judge, may be kept perfectly airtight in this
way, notwithstanding the number of the functions
for if upon p in making inflammable Air, for example, upon
first trial I have been able to smell the Air,
I have found no difficulty afterwards to put a stop to
that effect.
The advantages of this Apparatus over the common one are as
follows.
It serves
1 In the old method where the Acid menstruum is applied
to the solvend, it can only be applied in small
quantities at a time on account of the
ebullition. The application must therefore be frequently
repeated; which is troublesome , for a with regard to
and particularly the smoking ones. In this
new one a large quantity of Acid the menstruum is provided
once for all: and the Acid solvend shaken
in it as there is occasion. Applying the
Acid to the Metal is I think to be bringing the mountain
to Mahomet: applying the Metal to the
Acid, is bringing sending Mahomet to the mountain
2dly. In the old method the quantity of common Air
that gets in at the time of applying dropping in the cid
