Imprisonment examined

The answer of is that the aversion to the act offence [as]
depends merely as upon the magnitude of the pain that
is made to stand connected with it; but also it depends likewise upon
the strength of that the connection in the which takes is made to take
place between those two incidents in the patient's
mind. How that Solitude tor, Darkness, and Hard
Diet have a practice greater tendency than any other
kind of hardship to strengthen this connection I think
may be a satisfactorily made out. Acute punishment,
such as whipping, at the time it is inflicted
leaves no leisure for reflection. The present
sensation with the circumstances that accompany it, is such as engrosses the whole attention.⊞ ⊞ If any mental emotion mixes itself with the bodily sensation, it will rather be that of resentment against the Executioner, the Judge, the Prosecutor or any [either] person whose part share in the production of the suffering happens to strike the sufferer most, than any other.

As The anguish is soon over and as soon as it is over the ind of the patient is
occupied in the eager pursuit of objects that shall obliterate the
left open to the sollicitation of the objects which recollection as usual of the pain that he has endured; where all the objects
are want to engage his attention. by which he is surrounded contribute to repel those salutary reflections
upon which this reformation depends. [Before some
time has been given for reflection to cement rivet & cement
the idea of the guilt to that of the punishment].
For the idea of the punishment to be firmly rivetted
to that of the guilt which gave occasion to it to
it requires a certain time of leisure during
which the mind⊞ ⊞ vacant of every other foreign impression may be continually occupied in
holding them up to view as it were at once & passing from the one of them to the other. But
where whipping only is the punishment, no such
