<p> I am just <sic>return'd</sic> here from a journey<lb/> I have been making with Prince Potemkin to visit<lb/> the new Government of Taurica Chersoneses. It was <lb/> at <unclear>Karaslavar</unclear> that I <sic>receiv'd</sic> your last Letter, and <lb/> as it was just before we set out for <unclear>Bochtebisceras</unclear> & <lb/> Octiar that I received my Packets I had not time to <lb/> open your Letter before we got into the Carriage<lb/> As however I knew your hand and what was more <lb/> to the purpose the great Esteem the Prince has <lb/> for you I <sic>ask'd</sic> him leave to read it before him.<lb/> He was very desirous of knowing the Contents but<lb/> unluckily there was little which could interest him.</p> <p> He has more than once <sic>desir'd</sic> me when I write<lb/> to you to remind you of the promise you made <lb/> him to visit the Crimea when it should become <lb/> annexed to the Russian Empire. Certainly should <lb/> you at any time be so <sic>dispos'd</sic> you would give him <lb/> great pleasure. If you choose to be a proprietor<lb/> of Land in that charming Peninsula you have <lb/> only to say of what kind it should be and He <lb/> will give it you. Neither does he seem to make <lb/> your visit a necessary condition. You may have <lb/> your Estate ready to receive you first.</p> <p>You know perhaps that we are in expectation<lb/> of the Empress's visiting these Countries next <lb/> Summer. As I have all reason <sic>posible</sic> to be <lb/> satisfied with the treatment I meet with from the <lb/> Prince so the more I see of his Character the more <lb/> reason I have to esteem and admire it.</p> <p> With respect to myself I believe I have told you <lb/> if not that I actually was, at least that I was <lb/> to be taken into the Army as Lieut: <sic>Collonel</sic>.<lb/> By this means I depend entirely on him and <lb/> in the manner He seems to mean to employ me<lb/> I shall depend on no one else. The principal<lb/> business which I am at present about to undertake<lb/> is the Building some vessels of different kinds at <lb/> his Estate of Krectchoff on the borders of Poland<lb/> where all Materials have their source.</p> <p> The perfectly <sic>unrestrain'd</sic> permission which he <lb/> gives me to follow my own ideas on that Subject<lb/> afford me the best of opportunities of putting <lb/> in execution several of my projects: and this <lb/> makes me wish much that I could have to <lb/> consult those who like your friend M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. I may probably have to do with all <lb/> the different varieties of war, transport & Inland<lb/> Navigation. A Vessel of the latter division a kind<lb/> of rowing Yacht I must have ready by next Spring<lb/> when her Majesty will descend the Dnieper over the <lb/> water falls and as far as Cherson. I am not yet <lb/> decided <sic>wether</sic> there shall be 50 or 100 oars to this <lb/> Vessel; but by some means or other I mean to make <lb/> it excel in Swiftness and what is more difficult <lb/> in elegance all others. The next concern will be <lb/> a kind of Frigate which will scarcely have less<lb/> than 60 Guns. but of this I can as yet say but <lb/> little as it is but a few days since the idea is<lb/> started of my building ships of war according to <lb/> my own fancy. The best of all is that I have <lb/> nothing at all to do with the Admiralty, workmen<lb/> as well as materials, I shall have independent of them.</p> <p> Consider & recollect if you have any <lb/> friend or acquaintance who almost as Shipbuilding<lb/> mad as I used to be, could find it agreeable to <lb/> pay me a visit and see executed such improvements<lb/> as we between us judge expedient. Or who not <lb/> being able to come himself is disposed to communicate<lb/> any Observations on any branches of the Marine <lb/> Department.</p> <p> Were any of your acquaintance <sic>dispos'd</sic> to pay me <lb/> a visit, you are certain that he would have <sic>ev'ry</sic><lb/> possible accommodation which I could procure, and <lb/> if you should know of any Body who not being in <lb/> circumstances to afford such a journey at his own <lb/> <sic>expence</sic> could be of use to me in my pursuits,<lb/> I engage to pay his <sic>expences</sic> here and back again<lb/> as well as to give him a small Salary should <lb/> he be disposed to accept of it. I could however<lb/> give no expectation of it answering to a man in <lb/> point of profit, as over & above his <sic>expences</sic> I <lb/> could scarcely Give him more than he could <lb/> receive as a workman at home.</p> <p> As I am sure you will not consider any Assistance<lb/> which could be given to my present business as in <lb/> the least degree contrary to the Interests of your<lb/> Country, therefore from the acquaintance you have <lb/> with those of the Naval department it is possible you <lb/> may hear of somebody who may come out, if so Riga<lb/> is the nearest Port with the advantage of water<lb/> carriage for any heavy Luggage up as far as Vitepsk.</p> | |||

I am just return'd here from a journey
