Nights began to be chilly. October brought us abundance
of Rain with a heavy dense Atmosphere. November
much Sleat & Snow which last however did not lye
till the beginning of December, when the Frost sets
in and continued without interruption for five weeks
I can hardly give you an Idea of it's severity, but
by telling you that our Houses are built of Logs of
Fir, which being extremely contracted by the Cold,
split with a great noise, chiefly in the night, so that I
have often been awakened by it, in all our Houses
are one or more Stoves to resist the Cold otherwise
they would not be habitable, and it is not pleasant
to go without doors, unless we have a Shubb, or
great Coat lined with some kind of skins dresses
with the hair on. I have been wrapped up in one
of Wolves Skins with a Bear Skin Muff & Hairy Cap
and cut such a figure in them that I verily believe
I should have a long Train of attendants were I to
go through Newcastle equipped as I am ordinarily
here.

We had from the 8th of January very fine moderate
weather which lasted a month, when the Frost again
set in and yet continues very intense.

I have for your information set down the average
Prices of
some of the Principal Necessaries of Life

Please to remember me to Mrs Walton and tell her that
My rooms are ornamented with some beautiful Birds you have not in
England, I have likewise been making a Collection of Butterflies which I
may one day let you see, as well as a copious account of what I see
remarkable here.

Presenting kind respects to my old acquaintances & a respectful
remembrance to Mr Malrie Soarsbie & Shew him the Prices of Things
here it would give me much pleasure to hear from you till when, I am
Yours sincerely & respectfully
R. Beaty.

N. Direct for me with Col Bentham
at Critchoff to the Care of the Postmaster at Riga.
