A Letter from S.B. to L. Col. Fanshaw near Kremenchook

Cherson Sep. 13/2 1787

I have been fitting for War, as well as the Circumstances
admit those cursed Gallies on which the Empress and
her Suit came from Kioff, worse contrived they
could not be: but some of their faults were radical
I flatter myself that they will row at least as fast
again as they would in their former state. They
fight from 8 to 10 Guns, 3 pounders, and one
brass kind of Mortar, or rather caranade, carrying
44-pound Shell. They take a Company of Soldiers,
besides 20 Artillery Men, and 8, or 10 Sailors —
Four of them are commanded by English Volunteers,
who for the time are called acting Lieutenants.
There are seven of these Gallies, which with half
a dozen Vessels carrying from 4 to 6 — 18 or 36
pounders, and perhaps as many Gun boats,
compose the Fleet with which we hope to take
burn and destroy our magnanimous Enemies.
