Bamber Gascoyne, I see is advanc'd to be one of the Lords of the
Admiralty, who wod have thought it? requisites he can have
none but strong natural Parts, & natural Confidence, such
as a first Lord, may find useful to him, upon occasion. I cod
not stoop to apply to him, on the Strength of my long knowledge
& acquaintance with him to ask for a place for you in
the King's yard, — I had much rather you wod be one
Day, some thing for yourself, independently, unless it were
a Commissioner of ye Navy, wch. your Personal Knowledge
& the Interest you have made, may possibly procure you
in case you make a proper use of your Excursive Scheme.
in that case you may have more pretensions in that case
than many that are appointed to such Kkind of Offices —
but all those things are as they happen, & are determin'd
by a number or some few lucky Circumstances that occur
in the Course of human Events.

To make yourself a little acquainted with Copenhagen, Stockholm
& Petersburgh, it may not be amiss if you were to read over
or take with you a Tour to those places by N. Wraxall Junr
publish'd in one Vol. Octavo within these few years, viz since 1775. It is dedicated to Lord
Clare (now LordEarl Nugent, there are some Episodes in it that
saver of Romance, but some thing may be collected from
it, of use to a Traveller — there is likewise Voyages & Travells
thro' the Russian Empire in Two Vols. Octavo 2d edition in 1778
by John Cook M.D. at Hamilton (in Scotland) undertaken by
the Author in or about the year 1740-1- &c but perhaps there are
better than these - some Books of the kind you may find of use
to you — These are what I have got lent me by a Book Club
at Brackley, & wch. I am lead to read on your account.

There is a leathern Pen case and Ink bottle in one, that I used
always to carry about me when I travell'd, for wch. the Author
had a Patent, that is very Convenient, my own I have some how
lost about a year ago. but I wod advise you to procure
such a one, as it is very lasting & serviceable I used to cCarry
it in my side-Breeches-Pocket; but now I recollect you have no such
