4. defects (a) In In the infancy of society , when every thing
was in miniature , this security measure might in
general be sufficient . When a one sentence was enough served
for a conveyance , a day might serve be enough for a
trial . A sentence serves for a conveyance still :
though that sentence would often fill a volume , and
costs the price of as much as many thousand volumes : for
sentences are made of stretching leather . the lawyer's sentences are made of the same leather with their
consciences. Juryman's day is not Unfortunately the equally alike flexible . English Lawyers , have by a geometry of their own , have
continued to make a term equal of a day : but found the secret of making <add>reducing a term of a month to the scantling more than</add>
the powers of gibberish their art have not gone so far as to make expand a
day to the <add>bulk demon as of</add> equal to a term. The Juryman's day
has retained its dim original dimensions : and
so have the understandings of lawyers , and of
legislators blended and led by lawyers. Here as elsewhere , it It is
for inexperience to give law to experience , barbarity
to civilization : what was at first tolerable , when
it has ceased to be so , mounts aloft , and becomes adorable.
