Be the man who he may – be his works
what they may, that any service which it may be in
the nature of them to render to , is likely
to be more effectual, in the case of their being edited brought into the world
in his life time than if left to all such chance as
may have place after his death, will not appear
exposed to doubt. The present work such as it is
coming out in my life time, and before the intellectual faculties
of the author are compleatly extinct, should
objection error in any shape be made charged in public to any
part, I may still be in a condition to obviate
it if it appears to me ungrounded, or to
acknowledge the justice of it, and find propose an appropriate
correction to it in the other case.

The advantage produced by the that same course thus
taken near thirty years ago by the instrumentality
of my late so deservedly admired friend Dumont
is no secret to any part of the civilized
world. He It was at his instance, that in their
rough state my papers, for the purpose of his seeing
what use could be made of them, were put into his
hand. From the testimonials which are before the
public, and the multitude number of copies which various in so many different languages
languages are already in circulation

may be judged whether I my compliance with that
