Codes of morality
thus formed distinguished
into
general and particular

These codes of morality might in the same manner as the codes of law be distinguished into
general and particular [like the codes of law] Of In
the private particular codes the best part would be that
as would the choicest part would be that which
consisted of anecdotes taken from real life exemplifying
the virtues of most importance to each
condition in life. There would consequently be so
many collections of anecdotes as there were are conditions
of life civil or domestic that require any thing
particular features of in the character of the person
who stands invested with them: such as that of
the physician, the soldier the physician the lawyer, the divine
the tradersman; the statesman, the judge. The
titles divisions in these codes might correspond to the several
virtues of which the several conditions are which are the respective most looked for in the
are more particularly called upon to display
persons by whom these conditions stations are respectively
plied: such as intrepidity, promptitude of obedience, long-suffering, humanity in the soldier;
disinterestedness and humanity in the physician &
the lawyer; disinterestedness, humility, mildness
tolerance, undogmaticalness liberality of sentiment in the divine: integrity
