Definitions & Distinctions
The word punishment, in the name
it which it will be ought to be in
employed in the following pages, may not,
at first sight, appear to stand in need
of and of any definition. It might appear
more difficult or even unnecessary
to endeavour to give a cl more precise
conception of it than that which is already
possessed by every person by whom it happens
to be employed. But this popular
meaning of the word, however clear it
might appear to be, does not really
possess, the degree of accuracy that is requisite
for the present pr occassion: it
does not for instance serve to distinguish
the act of punishment from a

analogy, and with which it is liable to be
