It is already been observed that as in the individual<lb/>
so in Society at large in infancy i e in the earliest<lb/>
stage of its existence the affection of sympathy is<lb/>
in its weakest state: viz. the affection itself considered<lb/>
in and by itself and the force of that same affection<lb/>
considered as tending to give birth to action<lb/>
<add>As</add> In the individual so in Society as age, and experience<lb/>
advance their affection and its force and efficiency<lb/>
receive increase. As to the affection itself it is<lb/>
only in respect of force that it can receive increase<lb/>
But considered as a principle and source of action<lb/>
it is capable of receiving and does accordingly<lb/>
receive increase in two distinguishable ways: viz<lb/>
1<add>st</add> in respect of its efficiency, with reference to any<lb/>
individual in whose <sic>favor</sic> it may be considered<lb/>
as operating i e in respect of the magnitude of<lb/>
the services <del>of</del> which it has the effect of rendering<lb/>
or causing endeavours to be used to render<lb/>
to him, and thence the sacrifices which it causes<lb/>
to be made for the purpose of rendering those<lb/>
services: 2<add>dly</add> &#x2014; in respect of <hi rend="underline">extents</hi>; i&#x2014;e in respect<lb/>
of the number of the persons in whose favour it<lb/>
operates as above. At first, the circle, within which<lb/>
are contained the individuals in whose <sic>favor</sic> it operates,<lb/>
in other words the field of its operation is confined<lb/>
to or even within that in which are included<lb/>
the individuals most closely attached to the individual<lb/>
agent in question for example by consanguinity, by<lb/>
affinity, by domestic contract, by habitual, and at the<lb/>
same time friendly intercourse. As experience increases<lb/>
and mental culture advances the field of operation &amp;<lb/>
influence of this principle of action enlarges itself<lb/>
more, and more; it extends itself successively, or at the<lb/>
same time to other such individuals <unclear>res<add>++</add>ply</unclear> connected with<lb/>
the individual in question by the ties of profession<lb/>

It is already been observed that as in the individual
so in Society at large in infancy i e in the earliest
