Object of this work rendering
men's interests and
duties in private life
clear.

Necessary to be shewn
1. Relation between interest
and duty
2. Between both do. and
virtue and vice
3. Relation between these
and several intermediate
objects: pleasure and pain
— desires — motives — affections,
dispositions &c

That it is not a man's
duty to do what upon
the whole it is his interest
not to do: accordingly
laws have for their object
the making a man's interest
coincide with
that which they make
his duty.

That in the general lines
of life a man should
sacrifice his interest
to his duty, is neither
practicable nor with
reference to the sum
of human happiness
desirable.

Shewn will be, the relation
of virtue and vice to
interests and duties: and
that virtue is in proportion
to tendency to promote
happiness.

All virtues are modifications
either of prudence
or benevolence or both: all
that is worth regard for
its own sake being happiness:
all happiness the do.
of the agent, or of others.

Ultimate practical object
shewing to each
what conduct will be
most conducive to his
own happiness: to do. of others
no otherwise than in so
far as the interest of others
coincides with his: i:e
by promoting do. of others
to promote his: that any
further regard should be had

but that more than men
are generally aware every
man's happiness is

Prudence is
1. Purely self-regarding
viz where no interests
but those of the agent
are at stake — Dictates of
purely self regarding
prudence constitute the
title of the matter of such
division 1st of the 1st
division of the practical
part.

II Extra-regarding prudence:
where the interests
of others are at stake
though a man's own happiness
is the sole immediate
and ultimate object
of his case, yet so
generally affected is his
own happiness by the
effect which his actions
have on other man's happiness,
that do. become necessarily
an object of his
care in respect of prudence

such cases what are the
dictates of prudence
it becomes necessary
to know what are the
