The fact is — if this declaration of mine be the expression
of the truth — the fact is — that is of this work for its original
design this work had that branch of logic which
has for its object the putting frustration men's mind upon their guard
against all such arguments the as have for their tendency of which is to lead
to erroneous and by that means to mischievous practical
conclusions: an object corresponding to and requisite to
giving compleatness to the design to that corresponding object
what consists in the invention of all such arguments as
and other operations and instruments by a direct course may be found to tend to the discovery
of useful truth: a design of which that of Bacon expressed
by the words fiat experimentum and the explanation and
recommendation of which formed the business of his tract
intituled Novum Organum — though a capital and indeed the principal part
was however but one part

If this be true, nothing could be further from being partial or otherwise deceptious than in the original design and
frame construction of this work: if in its progress the tendency of it
has acquired an appearance as above a complexion and suspicion
of partiality, so much the worse it is that an objection to which the nature
of the case affords not any remedy: it is the fault
neither of the design nor of the work itself, but of those
by whom it is viewed in that partial light. If The effect design
and tendency is to save those whose desire it is to be
saved from being becoming victims a prey to deception, from
whatever source and in whatever part of the field of thought
and action it may happen to it to present itself: that
which is within the department of government as well as the rest.
