The instrument employed for this purpose being — not
a rod, but a pair of compasses, one consequence is — that
the proof drawn, as above, from the identity, here fails: and the

2. Another is — that the figure thus drawn is — not the figure
professed to be drawn — a circle, but a ring.

3. A third is — that of the result prop in
fact produced by the operation, only one half, to wit
the triangular figure above the level is brought to view;
and thus while the two triangles are in truth produced
the lower one no truly as no less truly than the upper one, the conception
presented to the mind of the learner is — that no more
than one of them — that is to say the upper one — is produced.

Of the confusion thus produced in the mind, he who
is now writing this is an experienced witness.

In this one proposition all the propositions in
which use is made of the figure called a circle [+]
together with so the
such a multitude of
others which are
deduced from them,

has
this foundation: so the truth of it is that the for this
truth they every one of them depend.

Moreover in from this same first proposition may be seen
deduced derived the idea of that sort of mental instrument
which it may be of use to the learner to have a conception
of, and which may be called It may be termed a contrivance, or the contrivance
By it is meant expedient, by which, when
hit upon, the original inventor finds himself enabled to
fulfil the purpose which he had in view

In the present instance the in the smallest number of words
that have been can be made in any degree to answer the purpose,
