proportions

Of the mode of ascertaining proportions: or of the mode in which
proportions have been or may be distinguished & denominated.

Proportion is the relation said to be borne by two or more quantities
the one to the other.

Of Two magnitudes one
greater, less, or equal —

Two magnitudes being compared to one another with a view to the
quantity of each, the one first observed will be found to be in relation to
the other second, either greater, less, or equal. It is said to be equal, when it is regarded
as neither greater nor less. The idea attached to the word greater is a
positive idea. The idea attached to the word less is a positive idea. The idea
attached to the word equal, is a mere negative idea: by it is expressed
the absence of both, greatness & lessness.

In idea of magnitude
included idea of body
& space.

In the idea expressed by word magnitude, are included, the idea
expressed by the word body, & the idea expressed by the word space. By
every body a correspondent and equal portion quantity of space is occupied. The
idea of the correspondent & equal quantity of space is formed by conceiving
the body to have been removed & no other body to have occupied the portion
of space which had been occupied by it.
