equivalences

By what means, is the relation of an unknown to one
correspondent known quantity indicated and brought to view?
Answer. By means of the indication of the equivalence which
has place between that same unknown quantity and that same
known quantity.

By what means is has the equivalence which, as above, has
place between those same two quantities made indicated? by or say
What are the operations by the means of which that same indication has been
made of it. Answer. By abbreviation. Of the species of operations

— a series is shewn setting out from the stock of known
quantities which have place in the Numeration Table, and presenting
names of quantities denominations the names of quantities less and less known
the further they recede from it and by advance above it: and

degree in the scale of abbreviation: or say an additional degree
of compression or say condensation is effected.

Synonyms Synonymous terms brought within the compass of the mind
by a species of short-hand: and by this means, quantities
that are unknown made known. This is what Arithmetic
Algebra with their et cæteras are composed of. Here
we have may be seen — here we have — one half of the
whole — mathematics — unmixt mathematics. This is
No exaggeration here: nothing but what is true: Synonyms
expressed by short-hand! what can be more familiar?
What can be less repulsive. The Iliad in a nutshell.
So says an antient proverb. Here in less than a nutshell
may be seen more than an Iliad.
