1819 July 3.

To Erskine or Defence of Univ. agst Ed. Review

lett. 7 Whigs Anit Reformist
Universally orderly
1. Cromwell Army

In respect As to what concerns good morals and forbearance
after victory, between the Army and the Parliament of that time
there seems to have been no prominent diference: but that which
is prominent and beyond dispute, for it is from the Prime
Minister of the restored Royalty that we have it is the
prodigious contrast between that Virtue and moderation which show in both
these modification of Republicanism and that view and
licentiousness for which both in the charactersituation of military Commanders
and that of Cavaliers, in war and in peace
the Royalists were so incontrovertibly conspicuouspreeminent.

The Republicans had not in either form, either the wit
or the polish of the Royalists: and in the eyes of the half-philisopher
Hume the wit and the polish of the few being of mere
value than the happiness of all. hence it is that Royalism
engrosses till his affection, Republicanism his contempt.

Note (a)?

Eyes and time concurr in forbidding me any to rummage for
quotations. But an in early age youth when a Monarchy
was my is and Clarendon even among my idols such I will
remember were the remarks consigned to a memory not
still alive. unextinguished.
