With an act of coercion, an act of correction,
an act of restraint, an act of prevention, and an
act of compulsion or constraint [and an act of
torture] with all these sorts of acts when [ the evilsuffering
of some person or other] is made choice of
as the means of producing the effect, the an act
of punishment agrees again as a speciesgenus does
with one of it's species. Coercion being one of an
end of punishment, as vengeance is the other,
an acts of coercion occupy in the cases above-mentioned
one of the two sortsgrand divisions of acts of punishment
as an acts of vengeance do is the other. As to
acts of correction, acts of restraint, acts of prevention
and acts of compulsion or constraint, they are
all but so many species of acts of coercion
Theis differences between them are taken so many
differences regard either the person byon whom the
evil is to be inflicted, conduct it is meant to
influence, or the act anconduct itself which it is meant
to influence. An act of coercion is spoken of as
an act of correction where in as far as the only person whose
conduct it is meant to influence is the person
on whom the punishment is inflicted. In
the opposite case where it is intendedthe person whose conduct
it is meant to influence the conduct of other
persons, the word example is commonly introduced
