Different objects liable
to be confounded

of punishment.

Different sorts of evils are liable to be confounded
with punishment. Accordingly it is with different sorts
of objects that different evils modes of punishment are liable
to be confounded: it is with different modes of punishment
that different evils of objects are apt liable to be confounded.
To distinguish and denominate those different
modes will be the business of the ensuing chapter.
