Herald May 16 1798
Letters recieved by the
Carnfort Frigate from
the Cape of Good Hope
state that the crew &
Soldiers on board the
Lady Shore transport
bound to New South
Wales, had risen on
the officers, and after
murdering the Captain
and Mate, possessed,
themselves of the Ship.
It was supposed they
had steered for some
Spanish Port in South
America. This ship had
chiefly Female Convicts
on board: amongst the
few male convicts
was the noted Major
Semple, but the principal
loss to the Colony
will be the valuable
naval and other stores
which the Lady Shore
had on board

Times May 16 1798
Monday morning 40
male convicts were removed
from Newgate
under a guard of Constables
to be conveyed
to Portsmouth, and from
thence to Botany Bay.
One of them cut his throat
previous to his removal
from Newgate, what
being observed by the
Turnkeys, the Surgeon
to the prison sewed up
the wound, and he
was handicuffed &
sent off with the others.
