<p><add>Bestowed</add> Given in consideration of <add>public</add> service, money is given<lb/>

Given in connection with office, it is given to<lb/>
a man either during his continuance in office,<lb/>
antecedently to his <del>acceptance</del> <add>entrance</add>  into office or subsequently<lb/>
to his retreat <add>retirement</add> from office.</p>
<p>When given to a man during his continuance<lb/>
in office and in consideration of the services expected<lb/>
from him in execution of the duties of his office, the<lb/>
following are <del>the purposes <add>distin</add></del> so many distinguishable<lb/>
<add>distinctions</add> purposes with <add>in respect of</add> a view to <add>in</add> which the bestowal of <add>the quantity of</add> public<lb/>
money <add>actually bestowed</add> on the official person has been in use <add>wont</add><lb/>
to find its justification real or supposed.</p>
<p>1.  <hi rend="underline">Preservation against corruption</hi>:  preservation against such<lb/>
temptation as he may stand exposed to during his<lb/>
possession of the office, by the <add>such</add> powers and opportunities<lb/>
which <add>as</add> it may afford him for possessing himself of<lb/>
undue emolument by undue means.</p>
<p>2.  <hi rend="underline">Provision for responsibility</hi>:  viz. <add>i.e.</add> for eventual <del>burthensome</del><lb/>
<hi rend="underline">responsibility</hi> in the burthensome<hi rend="superscript">(a)</hi> sense of the word<lb/>
viz. to the purpose of making <add>pecuniary</add> compensation or suffering<lb/>
<add>pecuniary</add> punishment in the event of his yielding to any such<lb/>
temptation as above.</p>
<p>3.  <hi rend="underline">Provision for</hi> <add>dignity: – for</add> the maintenance of official <hi rend="underline">dignity</hi>.<hi rend="superscript">(b)</hi></p>
<p>(a)  In the beneficial sense.  By the matter of wealth, in proportion<lb/>
to the quantity he has of it, a man may be said to be rendered<lb/>
responsible by it in the beneficial sense of the word <add>responsible</add> responsibility<lb/>
in respect of his having it to enjoy:  in the burthensome sense<lb/>
in respect of his having it to lose:  i.e. in respect of his capacity,<lb/>
of his being deprived of it on the score of delinquency by the power of the<lb/>
law, the responsibility<lb/>

Parly Reform Sinecures

Bestowed Given in consideration of public service, money is given
in some cases in connection with office, in others other
cases without any such connection with office.
Given in connection with office, it is given to
a man either during his continuance in office,
antecedently to his acceptance entrance into office or subsequently
to his retreat retirement from office.

When given to a man during his continuance
in office and in consideration of the services expected
from him in execution of the duties of his office, the
following are the purposes distin so many distinguishable
distinctions purposes with in respect of a view to in which the bestowal of the quantity of public
money actually bestowed on the official person has been in use wont
to find its justification real or supposed.

1. Preservation against corruption: preservation against such
temptation as he may stand exposed to during his
possession of the office, by the such powers and opportunities
which as it may afford him for possessing himself of
undue emolument by undue means.

2. Provision for responsibility: viz. i.e. for eventual burthensome
responsibility in the burthensome(a) sense of the word
viz. to the purpose of making pecuniary compensation or suffering
pecuniary punishment in the event of his yielding to any such
temptation as above.

3. Provision for dignity: – for the maintenance of official dignity.(b)

(a) In the beneficial sense. By the matter of wealth, in proportion
to the quantity he has of it, a man may be said to be rendered
responsible by it in the beneficial sense of the word responsible responsibility
