Punishments

Pillar of Disgrace

The Pillar of Disgrace is a plain round Pillar
supporting an emblematical painting, representing
Infamy flying the face of Virtue.

Infamy is represented by a young man covering
his face with his hands and running
from a house; at the door of which stands
virtue in the character of a venerable old man with
one hand stretched forth in a repelling attitude,
warning him away.

To unlawful Homicide. p. 16

Ignominious and
Afflictive punishment
Greater Bifrontal
of the
Masquerade
Impostor's mask

The ignominous and afflictive punishment of the Bifrontal Masquerade Impostor's Mask
is thus performed of two hands the greater and the
less

The punishment of the greater Bifrontal masquerade is thus to
be performed

1. The back part of the offender's head is to be close shaven.

2. It is then to be made to resemble a human face
as much as possible by means of a set of artificial
pictures separately stuck on or painted on the skin:
viz: an artificial nose, a pair of artificial eyebrows;
a pair of thin plates of glass coloured so
as to represent eyes: a mouth painted, or the resemblance
of a mouth with teeth in it stuck on.

3. In like manner a stuffed figure shall be adapted
to his back parts representing the forepart of a
person's body properly dressed according to the sex with arms
and legs compleat.
