Evidence

Of these present works the object

The field of evidence is no other than the field
of human knowledge. On this field the researches
the result of which form the matter of the present work
extend not, it is true, beyond the case in which evidence
is capable of being operative to a legal purpose.
But, forasmuch as, in the whole field of human
knowledge there is scarce a conceivable spot, on from
which evidence may not, in one account or other,
be called for to a legal purpose,(a) because it is, that
by this limitation it is rather in words than effect
that the f by this limitation the field of enquiry
will be found to be
that, in effect the portion cut
off from the field of enquiry research by this limitation, will
be found not to be neither very considerable or nor altogether
determinate.
