which it is not possible to go, is <add>would be</add> a circumstance <add>an observation</add><lb/>
too singular to be credited upon <add>subscribed to</add> a bare assertion.<lb/>
But from a temper <add>however inflexible to reason</add> that adapts itself with<lb/>
great <unclear>pliability</unclear> to contradictions, it happens<lb/>
that those who are most strenuous <del><gap/></del> <add>in their<lb/>
opposition</add> of any kind of improvement, are <add>often</add> among the<lb/>
most clamorous in their lamentations of <add>a</add>
general depravity, <add>which should seem to make a reformation more</add><lb/>

likely to lay
down such rules
as men like
themselves would
understand, but
because if those
cases had been
decided by the
Jury as they ought to have been
they would have
dropped into the law of
