Nothing can stand clearer from every imputation
of evasion. It is not a compleat digest of the matter of
the advertisements intelligence, it is a mere only a Digested index to that matter
an indication of the sources where that matter
is to be found. Few things can well be Nothing can be clearer that the
line of distinction between a literary work of any hand, and
an index to that work: no such idea was ever yet entertained
by any one as that of an index, being
one index and nothing more, being yet capable of answering
the purpose of the work itself.

What is more The truth is, if the proposed work were really any
thing more than an index, were it to be made capable
of standing to any purpose in the place of
the works to which it refers, in a word if it were
a digest of the matter contained in the advertisements
instead of being an index to the advertisements themselves,
the very end in view that of affording a
large vast body of intelligence within a moderate practicable compass
would not be answered would be impracticable altogether
unattainable. A work of that sort would be a daily volume,
and the purchase of it as much out of the reach
of the purse of individuals in general, as the mass
of intelligence which it attempted to supersede.
