Execution of the Punishments

With regard to the expedients to be employ'd
for rendering the <scene of confinement terrible
without being destructive, the following observations
may be attended to. They are extracted from a
pamphlet entitled A View of the Hard Labour
1778 Bill. Lond. 1778 p.

Here insert the passage

I have found it to be the opinion of several
with whom

Many persons however are of opinion
that the circumstance of its being underground
is too essential to the in point of terror
to be omitted in the construction of a dungeon.
A dungeon under above ground, say they, is
a contradiction in terms: nor will any body regard
it. It may therefore be adviseable therefore perhaps to have the dungeons underground; but upon this
condition only and not otherwise, that they provided
they never be of those circumstances
which make them the destructive effects of
dungeons constructed in the manner in which it has
hitherto been customary to construct them can be obviated.
These are all owing to the want of a change of
air: which it should seem might be ensured by
means of fire. The way will be to make two outlets entrances
to the dungeon or suite of dungeons: at one entrance
