Disablement. Evils.

itself productive of any detrimental consequences:
the only mischief attending it are 1st the organical
pain that may accompany it. 2dly the disablement of the some or all of those other members
the disablement of which is in itself productive
of detrimental consequences. The Stomach for
example of itself is neither the instrument
of any sensual pleasure, nor performs any work
nor contributes to the interchange of thoughts: but
if by stopping putting a stop to its functions sickness is produced,
that sickness may be enough to incapicate a man
from every kind of work, to destroy his relish
for food, and his enjoyment of conversation.

Of all the members of a man's body the organs
of the senses stand distinguished from the rest
in that they are the only ones that are the
immediate instruments of any certain assignable
kind of pleasure. The other members could be
of no use whatever where it not for their contributing
in a remote way to the pleasures of which the organs of
sense are the immediate instruments, or to the
warding off of pain. Even the organs of life
are not of any value in themselves; for it is
not mere being that is valuable, but well-being.
No more as such are the organs of
generation: for it can could not be valuable desirable to any
one
