Should the present bias of public opinion in this head be deemed
exaggerated in any degree or ill- mis-placed or even
altogether groundless, the importance of excluding
enquiries of the nature in question from the
theatre of public justice would be very little suffer but little
impaired domination. If the scenes display'd upon that
theatre are regarded as by the guardians of
youth and through them by youth itself as
dangerous to virtue the force of the cause which
drives them tends to exclude them from that most useful of all schools
will be the same whether the opinion be well
is ill-grounded. It is therefore of importance
that such destructions should be established relative
to this head as may hold out to the all classes
of persons concerned an effectual a satisfactory security against
this sort of danger: and that women of refined
