Panopt. Compensation Claim III. Contract
(4) 4. Becker
3. Third and last article in this same division of the Table.
The net profit arising from the labour of the prisoners
employed exceed the total amount occasioned by the
maintenance of all the prisoners who have been in custody" —
(meaning doubtless though not saying during that same year) £62:9:0
But from this statement I see not what conclusion
can be drawn relative to the proportion between "the net profit
"arising from the labour of the prisoners" and the (to use the
words of the examination of the gentleman in question
as reported on p.34) "the total expence of the establishment,
"salaries and every contingency": for throughout
the whole of this Table by the word maintenance it
is plain is meant no more than the provisions viz
the food and drink allow consumed by the prisoners:
viz. to the exclusion not only of Officers salaries but of every
contingency, clothing in particular included.
Thus it is that of the data contained in this Table
that the only part which exhibits the accounts of any year,
ra real and ascertained, real but not ascertained,
or imaginary is not ap susceptible of any application
to this purpose: and nor yet is the only p other
part, it being no more than the account of a single
week, and that week not ascertained. Is it the
week last preceding the day on which this examination
was taken on or about which day it may be supposed
that the Table to which it all along bears reference
was delivered in? But this do week was a week
in the month of March 1811: and the year mentioned
in the Table being therein mentioned by the description of the
year ending the 24 of June must at the latest have
been the year ending on the 24th of June 1810.
