Disablement.
The Nose
The internal nose may be disabled in the transient way
by pressure or obturation of the external: in the perpetual temporary
way possibly by inflammatory applications; in
the perpetual way possibly by caustics applied to the
Membrane [Schneideriana] which is the immediate organ
of the sense in question.
The Ear
The internal ear might be disabled though but
imperfectly in the transient way by obturation of the internal ear: in
a perpetual temporary way by violent noises: perhaps by inflammatory applications: in a perpetual way perhaps by destruction
of the stapes, incus or malleus: possibly certainly perhaps by destruction
or puncture of the auditory nerves tympanum.
The Mouth
The Mouth might be disabled in the transient way
by bandage; in a temporary way, by suture: in the
perpetual way hardly without death.
The Jaw
The Jaw may be disabled in the transient way
by Gagging: in the temporary or perpetual way by hardly;
if at all not without death dislocation.
Gagging What
Gagging is performed by forcing fixing a spike into in the mouth
so as to bear in at one end upon against the palate, and
with the other end upon the inside of the lower Jaw
or by thrusting athe mouth a ball, just small
This is one means of putting a stop to the faculty of
enough to be got in. It cannot will be got out again without
speech assistance.
The Tongue
The Tongue may might be disabled in the transient
way by a spike forced through it when it is out of
the mouth: in the a permanent way hardly by
any means. This is another means of putting a
temporary stop to the faculty of speech. The faculty of speech
could hardly be destroyed but by mutilation.
