Heaven pity that wretched one! – Earth has no smile
For him she had smil'd on so long
And pleasure & pride have no power to beguile;
And conscience awakes, – & awakes to revile
With the sting of a her venomous tongue.

In that moment of dread – let my couch be attended.
With visions of hope & of joy;
Let thy records of sweet recollection be blended
With faith's holy prospects, – that & splendid
Oft beam from you the glories on high.

The future is shaded in darkness; – but Thou
Canst bid all that darkness remove;
And as the fair morn gilds the mountains tall brow
Wilt Remove the midnight of death with the glow
Of beauty, of light & love
