Discolourment Simple modes of Punishment

With respect to the choice of these three to four methods of
producing the same permanent effect, it is to be observed
that the three last of them, viz, scarifying, corrosion
and branding are necessarily attended with
a very intense degree of pain The pain of tattooing
is comparatively as nothing. If then the design be
an in part of the punishment to produce excruciative organical
pain, it is well: any of these three methods, if
that one of them alike commodious on other accounts
may indifferently be employ'd. If not, tattooing is that which ought indispensably to be employ'd: for the in this case, the organical pain produced by the other
methods is will be so much misery punishment in waste.

It is obvious that [the surface susceptible of] this
mode of punishment is not (as in the case of like) Disablement
limited to such parts as are endowed with
separate motions or specific functions. The whole exterior
surface of the body is alike exposed to it:
those alone excepted as whereby being endowed with specific
functions, are so tender as not to be able without the
impairment of those functions, to support the operation.
