On the Report of the Commission for enquring into the State of the Court of Chancery.

Sir S. Romilly. When this question was before
under consideration – viz – whether a committee should
be appointed to inquire into the causes that retarded
the decisions of suits in Chancery, and appeals and
writs of error in the house of Lords consider to
the probable remedy, he had expressed his opinion
that the motions of his from friends should be
agreed to and without loss of time. He saw no reason
then nor did he see any now to justify the adjournment
which had taken place. – A report had indeed been
since made by a committee of the Lords which
on this the subject and communicated to this house.
But it contained nothing that ought to induce the
house to abstain from an inquiry of its own –
nothing to shew that such an inquiry was
unimportant – on the contrary it only served to prove
more strongly the necessity of an investigation
into the real state of the case – the nature of the
evil and the suitable remedy. –

They (the committee of Lords) stated certain
facts and then recommended that a new original
Judge should be appointed in the Court of Chancery.
He could not however but think that such an expedient
would be a far greater evil than that
which it was intended to remedy. So strongly was
